Patients are increasingly arriving with this question and they deserve a real answer rather than a deflection. A revision rate is the proportion of a surgeon's own primary cases that go back to the operating room. It sounds like a purity score and it is not. A surgeon who only accepts straightforward primary noses will report a lower number than a surgeon who takes difficult secondary work, and the second surgeon may be the better operator. A surgeon who defines revision as any return to theatre will report a higher number than one who counts only major structural revision, and neither definition is standard. There is no registry, no audit, and no agreed denominator, so every figure you are quoted is self-reported and self-defined. Ask three things instead. What counts as a revision in your practice. What is your rate across your last two hundred primaries. And what were the three most recent ones, and what did you learn. A surgeon who can answer the third question without becoming defensive is telling you more than any percentage could. Dr. Ashford answers all three at the consultation, unprompted.
