Counted Twice, Then Counted Again

Instruments are counted before an operation begins, counted again before closing, and counted a third time at the end. It is not a Rowan innovation, it is standard operating room practice, and we mention it because patients almost never hear about the parts of surgical care that are deliberately dull. Most of what makes an operating day safe is repetition of things that have never gone wrong. That is the intended outcome of a small schedule.
